William Chaffey, vicar, Stoke Church, 1601

William was very active in the village. He was appointed resident curate in 1582, and his name is on the parish registers of that period as having been the writer of those documents. He was appointed vicar of the church in 1601, and held the position until his death in 1621. He was a witness to the wills of his mother, Agnes, in 1585, and his uncle, John, in 1582. He is the first Chaffey in Stoke for whom we have complete documentation (baptism, marriage and burial) given that he was born in 1558, the first year that the records were kept.
